Earth Observation Data

Data Product Level

https://labo.obs-mip.fr/multitemp/the-product-names-how-they-work/

CEOS naming rules are quite difficult to find, and I had searched them several times unsuccessfully. But recently, I found the list of members of the CEOS product harmonization committee, and two of its members (Frédéric Baret (INRA, France), and Kenneth McDonald (NOAA, USA)) replied very quickly to my questions. The CEOS norm is based on a nomenclature defined by NASA in 1996, which is available on Data_processing_levels.

Some Level 3 product information

[downloaded] (20120125--now) OMPS-NPP L3 NM Ozone (O3) Total Column 1.0 deg grid daily V2 (OMPS_NPP_NMTO3_L3_DAILY)

  • provides total ozone measurements from the Ozone Mapping and Profiling Suite (OMPS) Nadir-Mapper (NM) instrument on the Suomi-NPP satellite.
  • The level-3 gridding algorithm is used to combine the orbital OMPS cross track measurements into a daily map product with a fixed global grid.
  • Grid cells are computed as weighted averages of a given parameter derived for the field-of-views that overlay the given cell.
  • Each granule contains data for a full day.
  • Hierarchical Data Format Version 5 or HDF5. About 2.5 MB per file.
  • Data structure example, snapshot of PanoplyWin (a GSFC software).

[downloaded] (20041001--now) OMI/Aura Ozone (O3) DOAS Total Column L3 1 day 0.25 degree x 0.25 degree V3 (OMDOAO3e 003)

  • This Level-3 global total column ozone product is derived from OMDOAO3 which is based on the Differential Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) fitting technique that essentially uses the OMI visible radiance values between 331.1 and 336.1 nm.
  • From user guide.
  • Each daily file contains data from the day lit portion of the orbits (approximately 14 orbits) and is roughly 8 MB in size.
  • ColumnAmountO3 is 1440 x 720
  • Data structure example, snapshot of PanoplyWin (a GSFC software).

[downloaded] (20041001--now) OMI/Aura TOMS-Like Ozone and Radiative Cloud Fraction L3 1 day 0.25 degree x 0.25 degree V3 (OMTO3e 003)

  • Total Column Ozone gridded product
  • Each file contains
    • total column ozone,
    • radiative cloud fraction and
    • solar and viewing zenith angles.
  • version 5 EOS Hierarchical Data Format (HDF-EOS5). The maximum file size for the OMTO3e data product is about 2.8 Mbytes.
  • ColumnAmountO3 is 1440 x 720
  • Data structure example, snapshot of PanoplyWin (a GSFC software).

[downloaded] (20041001--now) OMI/Aura TOMS-Like Ozone, Aerosol Index, Cloud Radiance Fraction L3 1 day 1 degree x 1 degree V3 (OMTO3d 003)

(20020831--now) AIRS/Aqua L3 Daily Standard Physical Retrieval (AIRS-only) 1 degree x 1 degree V006 (AIRS3STD 006)

  • The AIRS Only Level 3 Daily Gridded Product contains standard retrieval means, standard deviations and input counts.
  • Each file covers a temporal period of 24 hours for either the descending (equatorial crossing North to South @1:30 AM local time) or ascending (equatorial crossing South to North @1:30 PM local time) orbit. The data starts at the international dateline and progresses westward (as do the subsequent orbits of the satellite) so that neighboring gridded cells of data are no more than a swath of time apart (about 90 minutes).
  • The daily Level 3 products have gores between satellite paths where there is no coverage for that day.
  • The geophysical parameters have been averaged and binned into 1 x 1 deg grid cells, from -180.0 to +180.0 deg longitude and from -90.0 to +90.0 deg latitude.
  • The trace gases parameters are: Total Amounts and Vertical Profiles of Carbon Monoxide, Methane, and Ozone.
  • :TODO: I don't understand why its temporal resolution is 12 hours.
  • Too big data files: ~376.1 MB per file per day

(20020831--now) Aqua/AIRS L3 Daily Standard Physical Retrieval (AIRS-only) 1 degree x 1 degree V7.0 (AIRS3STD 7.0)

(20020831--now) Aqua/AIRS L3 Daily Support Product (AIRS-only) 1 degree x 1 degree V7.0 (AIRS3SPD 7.0)

(20020831--20160925) AIRS/Aqua L3 Daily Support Product (AIRS-only) 1 degree x 1 degree V006 (AIRS3SPD 006)

(20020901--20201101) AIRS/Aqua L3 Monthly Standard Physical Retrieval (AIRS-only) 1 degree x 1 degree V006 (AIRS3STM 006)

  • The mean values are simply the arithmetic means of the daily products, weighted by the number of input counts for each day in that grid box.
  • The counts map provides the user with the number of points per bin that were included in the mean and can be used to generate custom multi-day maps from the daily gridded products.

(20020831--20160925) Aqua/AIRS L3 Daily Standard Physical Retrieval (AIRS+AMSU) 1 degree x 1 degree V7.0 (AIRX3STD 7.0)

TOMS Meteor-3 Total Ozone UV-Reflectivity Daily L3 Global 1 deg x 1.25 deg V008 (TOMSM3L3)

AIRS/OMI (Level 2 and 3)

https://aura.gsfc.nasa.gov/omi.html

The Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) instrument can distinguish between aerosol types, such as smoke, dust, and sulfates, and measures cloud pressure and coverage, which provides data to derive tropospheric ozone.

OMI derives its heritage from NASA's Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) instrument and the European Space Agency (ESA) Global Ozone Monitering Experiment (GOME) instrument (on the ERS-2 satellite). It can measure many more atmospheric constituents than TOMS and provides much better ground resolution than GOME (13 km x 25 km for OMI vs. 40 km x 320 km for GOME).

OMI measures ozone profiles (in the UV) complimentary to those measured by TES and HIRDLS (in the IR) and MLS (in the microwave).

OMI measures the total column amount of atmospheric ozone NO2 as well as lower atmospheric dust, smoke, and other aerosols.

OMI is a nadir-viewing wide-field-imaging spectrometer, giving daily global coverage.
